Old time cable saver.

Ethernet splitter.variant cable saver. Need to be well shielded. Does not work on 1G networks. Take the other end of the cable, cut it to 9 inches and punch down the four pairs using the following wiring scheme: You will need two of them. Jack #1: 1 White/Orange to pin 1keystone jack 2 Orange to pin 2 keystone jack 3 White/Green to pin 3 keystone jack 6 Green to pin 6 keystone jack Jack #2: 4 Blue to pin 2 keystone jack 5 White/Blue to pin 1 keystone jack 7 White/Brown to pin 3 keystone jack 8 Brown to pin 6 keystone jack Once all the pairs are punched down, you can glue together side by side the two keystone jacks. Essentially:

Networking testing tools.

Image
No matter how much wireless networking there is, you have to have at least a small amount of hardwire. There are some tools that might be nice to have if you are using more than the minimal amount of cabling (aka hardwire). The tone generator helps you trace where a wire is routed through. Personally, in all my years as a tech, I think we used only just once. When trying to see if a network wall outlet was live, I used an end tester. you would use the tester coupled to a patch cable (short length of network cable). If things are working correctly, all four lights should be lit. Though with this unit, have seen a few false positives. If all the light are not lit, it can be a bad female plug or some fault down the line. Generally has only one port. To test a single cable. Connect both ends to the tester.  You would not connect it to a network or it will get damaged. You will need access to both ends of a cable to test. Generally these tools are used when p...

Getting wired.

The new vcr.

Image
Got out the old Mythtv box and updated it. Made a few tweaks and all was well. Now you can get standalone digital recorders aka pvr's that are not tied to a provider, Not tested any of them yet. Mythtv has one advantage that you can use it with thin clients and or touchpads as frontends to watch/listen media. Just like the new pvrs, with MythTV you can use OTA (over the air) antenna TV very easily. No wonder that cable subscriptions have allegedly gone down dramatically. Titantv .com is a good place for TV listings. http://www.instructables.com/id/Setting-up-a-computer-based-DVR-with-Mythtv-for-l/

ClearTV antenna. Free TV.

Image
We decided to make a very crude version of the famous  #ClearTV #antenna . We were able to get over 50 channels. Not bad for a couple pieces of foil. #Cablecutters   http://www.instructables.com/id/ClearTV-antenna-lookalike/

Gently nudged into wireless with a sledgehammer.

Image
Traditionally. I have avoided wireless like a ton of falling bricks.  Security requirements for wireless changes so fast that it is almost cost prohibitive to use. But so it goes. You say you will never use wireless, but you gently get attracted to using it like a drug. My first experience at using wireless was going to a retail establishment and taking advantage of their network. Then came the time I was staying at my brother's home while the AC was out, so to get internet I had to use wireless. Now with the Nexus 7 wireless has to be part of the home network. Let me digress here for a minute. How have we connected computers together in the past.  Originally people  used what is know as serial via modems (the old fashiion kind that hooked to the telephone line) or directly between two systems via serial ports. For more details see: http://www.instructables.com/id/Legacy-networking-with-linux/ . Then there was good old Laplink to transfer data between computers. Then we...

Experimental usb power adapter.

Image
Knowledge about electricity is required. Get an expert to help if you are the least bit unsure. We are not responcible for any and all issues. Great way to power your usb hubs if your pc can not handle it. Some hubs will not work with this setup, so try at your own risk.  Lot of people do this with the usb hubs, but I wanted to be able to use the hub without having to have the power attached.

Finally testing some over the air foil based antennas Also wanted to test the composite output of an old computer I have made. Next antenna, I think is a gray-Hoverman antenna. I tried to follow the specs the best I could. The last antenna I tested was a fractal based antenna. it was definitely directional.

Dead monitor just saved me $20.

Image
Huh? What do you mean that dead VGA monitor just saved you money?  That is what I did not have to go to the electronics store to purchase an overpriced VGA cable just to be cut apart. Why would I want to do that? Most personal computers now have what is know as the i2c (pronounced eye-squared-see) bus coming from the video port. Even the better touchpads and tablets have this port. This means you can connect all kinds of sensing devices to your computing equipment. Let's dig a little deeper. The most traditional sensors used are what is known as temperature sensors. They are electronic thermometers. So you could connect one or many of these sensors to the i2c bus off the computer's video port. Even some hdmi cables support this. Of course, you would need a special interface for your touchpad or tablet. But it is there. What can we do with the temperature sensors. The sensors can be placed in computer server rooms, around entertainment equipment (especially projecto...
